Yep, your windshield took a hit from a pebble. The dadgum thing was so small you didn't even see it coming. You heard the pop but couldn't tell where the sound came from. Maybe it didn't hurt anything.
Now you see it. It put a small break on the windshield. It's going to spread probably. You wonder if you are going to have to buy a new windshield now. Can the ding be repaired? Is it covered by insurance? What about the deductible? Is it a strong fix? What will it look like?
Have you heard that sometimes you can get a free windshield repair?
Did you know that using professionals to repair the rock chips in your windshield is the most efficient way to deal with this problem?
If you get a nail in your tire you would repair it wouldn't you? If you rip a sleeve on your jacket you would get it sewn up, wouldn't you? Why replace your windshield when you get a small chip break in it?
In the early days, autos had just regular glass. Can you imagine how dangerous that was? When the glass was broken the shards became knives to cut the occupants of the vehicle. Thankfully in 1903 a french chemist, Edouard Benedictus, invented laminated glass. It took several years before the auto manufacturers started using safety glass, but the auto glass was mainly laminated glass by the 1930's. There have been many improvements since then of course, but basically, windshield glass is two layers of tempered (or annealed) glass separated by a plastic interlayer. The plastic layer keeps adhered to the glass even when broken. If the projectile does not pierce the windshield, a "spider-web" break is seen in most cases.
Cracked windshield repair is made possible by injecting a special clear resin into the break down to the plastic interlayer. The resin is cured under pressure by ultraviolet light. There are several methods used to get the resin to all corners of the break. Vacuum, heat, and pressure are some of the most common ways. Sometimes, the professional windshield repair technician must drill a tiny hole into the top layer of glass to open the break enough to inject the resin.
The Chipped Windshield
WE repair your windshield at your home or place of business. We will do our best to arrange a time that is best for you. Service is a big part of our business. There are basically three types of windshield repairs that we work on. The bull's eye, the star, and the combination. We can normally repair either of these and make the break look better. We kept one Toyota going with the original windshield and 9 repairs for over 370,000 miles. We use the very best chemicals and resins. The resin we use achieves the strongest repair. Our resin offers a strong bond as well as it is hard and clear. Our repair is guaranteed for as long as you own the vehicle. We want to be your "Go To" people anytime you have a chip in your windshield.
When it breaks
It is always best to call us as soon as you can after a break occurs. The obvious reason is because the break is going to get larger. It may happen quickly or it may take months, but at some point, when conditions are right, it will start to run. There are other reasons to call us as soon as possible. Do not touch the break----this can leave oils from your skin on the break and cause it to be hard or impossible to get a good bond with the resin. Do not apply Rain-X because that product puts a coating on (and inside) the break that prevents a good bond. If it rains before the repair is made, small dirt particles can wash into the break. This causes a less desirable appearance in the finished repair.
Let's face it. We, as a race, are loading our environment with garbage. We are filling larger and larger tracts of real estate with our waste. At some point, we have to start thinking of what problems we are leaving for our children to deal with. Laminated windshields are large and bulky and do not recycle easily. Many landfills do not accept them. To recycle is a very complicated and expensive process in which both layers of glass have to be separated from the plastic interliner. The glass has to be processed since it is already tempered and the plastic has to be cleaned and recycled. We recommend that the windshield is repaired over and over until a break that is too large or in the wrong place to be repaired. Get all the use possible out of each windshield before it is recycled.
Many times, depending on what type coverage you have and which insurance provider you use, the repair is completely paid for by the insurance company. The repair is free to you. WE get approval from the insurance company and file the claim. You don't have to do anything except stand there, drink coffee, and watch us make the repair. Now that didn't hurt, did it?
If you don't have an insurance company to pay for it the cost is probably less than you think. Call us and we will give you an instant quote on a guaranteed repair.
